Nesebar, one of the most culturally rich places in Bulgaria, is known as the "Pearl of the Black Sea". The old town squeezes into a diamond-shaped peninsula not much bigger than the Vatican but with many more churches. Penca, one of our local experts, said: “Nessebar is a living museum. The 5th century buildings and monuments are still in use. The city's strategic location means that Nessebar has always been a center of commerce, so it makes sense that money was invented and first used in commerce here over 2,500 years ago.
You will start with a guided walking tour of the old town. Every step on the narrow, cobbled streets is a step back in time. Strolling through the alleys lined with old wooden houses, you will come across old Byzantine churches or remains of the classical period. This narrow peninsula has such a rich history that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is evidence that reflects architectural progress in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Follow your guide through the characteristic Old Town as you visit historic churches, some of which date back to Byzantine times. You will visit the interior of the richly decorated Church of St. Stephan and admire the frescoes on the walls. If you choose lunch, you'll head to the restaurant for a three-course feast.
