List of cruises for solo travelers - which ships have single cabins, how to avoid single supplements and have fun alone - (2023)

I was recently on a Twitter chat about a cruise and asked the cruise line rep, "Do you have single cabins or do you waive the single supplement on every trip?" and then grilled. They darken and no longer interact with me. Ignoring much of the travel community — the solo traveler (not the solo traveler, because you can be a solo traveler and not single), I think cruise lines continue to leave a lot of money on the table. I like to say, "A cruise is a taste of the destination, so you know if you want to come back and explore more." Cruising has its pros and cons, but for solo travelers it's a great way to travel the world and see multiple destinations in one trip. Once unpacked, be sure to do as much as you like. Whether social or antisocial: There are no rules. If you want to sail solo, the big question is “which boats have single cabins”? I did my best to compile a list of boats and current assignments for each cabin. Keep in mind that numbers are subject to change, but this is a starting point for your cruise research.

My solo cruise vacation

While I've only sailed on a few cruise lines (Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Disney, Norwegian) and had to (reluctantly) pay the single cabin supplement, there has been some (albeit slow) progress in the cruise industry, adding singles to some new ships -/Double cabins and upgrade some older ships when in dry dock. I wrote mineNCL studio cabin reviewjNorwegian EPIC singles loungeDue to my transatlantic voyage from Miami to Barcelona I thought it would be good to know what other options there are for cruising solo. Norwegian started single cabins on the NCL Epic in 2010, and over a decade later I'm still talking about the changes needed in the cruise industry to accommodate solo travelers.

When I traveled from Copenhagen to the Baltic Sea on Princess Emerald (no single cabins), there was a 50% offer that fitted the single supplement into my budget for an inside cabin, but single travelers are charged between 150-200% of the quoted fare value per person . I met a couple on board who refused to spend money on their cruise while booking some cruise tours, wine tasting, wine with my meal etc. Ultimately the cruise made more money for me as a solo traveler than for the couple.

Solo cruise observations

  • I applaud Cunard for recognizing the waning need for a photo gallery and casino and repurposing the space to add single staterooms on Queen Mary 2. Fifteen ocean view cabins is a wonderful start.
  • I'm happy for himcelebrity borderSingle cabins with terrace but there are so many categories above the lowest interior that it might be a high price for me. It will be a luxury, but a luxury at a price.
  • With a guaranteed cabin you can save money, i. H. the shipping company will allocate your cabin to you. You cannot choose the location of the cabin. If you absolutely must be midships, a guaranteed room is not for you.
  • Repositioning cruises (aka crossover, transatlantic, transpacific, etc.) can be a fantastic deal for solo travelers: longer days at sea and you get from point A to point B
  • Don't be surprised if single cabins are the first to sell out. There are only 4 single cabins on the Norwegian Pride of America, which sails year-round to the Hawaiian Islands.
  • If this is your first time cruising alone, it is best to consult a cruise expert to help you choose the right cruise line, ship and itinerary as there are so many options that choosing becomes debilitating.

Please note that the following is accurate to the best of our knowledge and cruise lines are subject to change. Given the moving target of fares, promotions, etc. I have not included prices, with the exception of Queen Mary's departure on 2nd November as this is quite fixed.

They are generally considered "US cruise ships" because the general cruise passenger mix, except in the Asian market, tends toward US guests. For us in the US, these are the top cruise lines in terms of advertising, promotions and social media.

Note: The pandemic has disrupted cruise lines, ships and capacity; As a result, single/single cabins and vessels may be suspended or no longer in service. It is best to check the website of the respective cruise line.

Single cabins by Cunard Cruise Lines

The Cunard line of luxury ships recently added 15 single cabins to the Queen Mary 2 when the ship underwent a dry dock conversion. The category code is KB and KC and is located midships on decks 2 and 3 as the area used to be the photo gallery and part of a casino (both no longer used I think) so the cabins have windows! The cabins have one double bed and range in size from 159 to 162 square feet. Cunard recently added single cabins,Britannia single cabinsto the other ships in your fleet. Cunard operates transatlantic voyages to and from New York and Southampton, England, as well as intensive itineraries of one month or longer. The ships are luxurious, cater to a larger demographic, and have a Canyon Ranch spa onboard.

Last November prices for a 7 day crossing from New York to Southampton, England were US$1,586 compared to US$699 per person for an inside cabin (single supplement is US$1,398) plus taxes/duties. So you're paying a little more for less space, but for a window overlooking the water. If you have points for a one-way flight to New York or London, this is a smooth and peaceful way to return home.

  • Cunard Queen Mary 2 – 15 Single Sea View Cabins (double bed)
  • Cunard Queen Elizabeth – 8 outside single cabins / 1 inside
  • Cunard Queen Victoria – 8 outside single cabins / 1 inside

Royal Caribbean single cabins

The latest boatsroyal caribbeanFleet, Ovation of the Seas, and Quantum of the Seas offer inside (virtual view) and ocean view options for single cabins ranging in area from 101 to 119 square feet and full-size beds, while others offer twin-size beds in smaller space on your others Ships. The balcony category interests me the most as the other ships are all inside cabins. A novelty is the virtual view from the balcony into the interior of some ships.

  • Anthem of the Seas - Interior (Full Bed) 14 Twin Cabins / Sea View 12 Twin Cabins
  • Adventure of the Seas - Interior (double bed) 5 single cabins
  • Brilliance of the Seas - Interior (double bed) 3 single cabins
  • Harmony of the Seas - Interior (Full Bed) 3 Double Cabins / Ocean View 12 Double Cabins (average 96 square feet)
  • Jewel of the Seas - Interior (double bed) 3 single cabins
  • Mariner of the Seas - Interior (double bed) 2 single cabins
  • Ovation of the Seas - Inside (double bed) 16 single cabins / 12 single cabins with sea view
  • Quantum of the Seas - Interior (full bed) 16 double cabins / Ocean View 12 double cabins
  • Radiance of the Seas - Interior (double bed) 3 single cabins
  • Serenade of the Seas - Interior (double bed) 3 single cabins

There are no individual guest suites, so you must book these with an individual surcharge of 200%, as you would any other relevant cabin category that offers more space. Honestly, in my experience, you should sleep and shower in your cabin so the space doesn't have to be too much at an additional cost. Note that single supplement payments earn you 2x Crown & Anchor loyalty points, while booking a single cabin only earns you 1x. So if you're interested in moving up to the elite tiers, this might be something for you to consider. which cabin should be booked. In addition, the regular room with an individual supplement can sometimes be cheaper due to the offers available. So do your research and consult a cruise specialist if you can't find the individual cabins to book online. They sell out quickly.

Custom stateroom Edge by Celebrity Cruises

If there's one new addition I'm excited about, it's the 16-cabin Celebrity Edge ship Edge Verandah. The category code is much larger than the normal cabin amenities, please note that they are on the verandah (balcony) level. Forward deck 6 has 16 double cabins that mirror the regular infinity balcony cabins but without a sofa (do you ever use the sofa when traveling alone? I don't). With around 142 square meters, including the balcony, they will please the discerning single traveler.

Celebrity is a popular line due to its wellness spa menus, entertainment and self-service wine kiosks; Unfortunately, they do not offer single cabins on their other ships. I first sailed solo with Celebrity on the Constellation Connie from Istanbul to visit Turkey and the Greek Islands. my newestCruzeiro Solo kein Celebrity EdgeSailing was amazing and with thatAqua class upgrade cruise offerAnyhow, it was fabulous!

Norwegian Cruise Lines – NCL Solo-Studiokabinen

Norwegian studio single cabinwins the innovation award in the solo traveler category. Studio cabins are 100 square foot interiors with a double bed! It's not a double bed. Staterooms typically have two decks and are connected by an interior staircase and a separate lounge with a wet bar, vending machines, coffee area, televisions, and a seating area for working or relaxing. pleasant and ensure a pleasant journey. For the solo traveler, the group of travelers who each want their own cabin, or the multi-generational family who has a traveling grandmother, aunt or uncle who don't want to share a cabin (my mom snores so everyone has their own cabin).

  • Norwegian Epic: 128 single studio cabins
  • Norwegian Breakaway: 59 single studio cabins
  • Norwegian Getaway: 59 single studio cabins

The category is Studio. Norwegian has even added single cabins to its Pride of America Hawaii cruise, which sails year-round. There are only four cabins, but if you want to visit Hawaii and the Hawaiian Islands, you can now. Please note that depending on promotions and special offers, the studio option may cost more than the single supplement in an interior room type. Studio lounge access is included with the studio reservation and those not staying in the studios can only access the lounge during happy hours.

Holland America Line Cabins Simple

LosCabañas individuais Nieuw Statendamwill overlook the sea and be artistically inspired. With only twelve individual booths, it will probably be the first to sell out. Holland America has an older sailing demographic so it will be interesting to see how these single cabins fare among older or younger travelers, particularly aCruise to Alaska🇧🇷 The average room is larger than most at 127-172 square feet but has a double bed. I liked that on Holland America each cabin has a fluffy bathrobe as well as a daily fruit basket (you can choose your fruit from the list or ask housekeeping for a fruit that isn't on the list).

  • Holland America Koningsdam - 12 Single Sea View Cabins (double bed)
  • Holland America Nieuw Statendam – 12 Einzelkabinen mit Meerblick (Doppelbett)
  • Holland America Prinsendam – 2 Single Sea View / 1 Inside

Generally, these European cruise lines focus their itineraries on most of their resident passengers coming from local European countries. That's not to say there aren't Americans on board, but not many as the ads, offers and social media are all targeted towards EU countries.

Costa Cruises single cabins

Boat. The Costa Diadema has single cabins with additional benefits available to guests. • Costa Fascinosa – nur 17 Kabinen
  • Costa Favolosa – only 17 cabins
  • Pacific Coast - 17 cabins only
  • Costa Serena – only 17 cabins

  • Fred Olsen Balmoral 64 individual single cabins
  • Fred Olsen Black Watch - 43 Einzelkabinen

Small luxury boats: Individual prices vary

Although ships do not offer single cabins, they may offer a lower single supplement or may waive the single supplement depending on the itinerary and the current promotion. These small boats are quite luxurious in terms of the amenities they offer and the features included in the price. Unlike mass-market ships, they may offer drinks, tours, or private dining included in the promotion.

River cruises: no single cabins

River cruises are a mix of boats and configurations. Some lines waive the single supplement on certain departures and offer the same room size as the basic cabin. Research according to the itinerary, ship size and your budget.

  • Ruler of the seven seas

  • Cruises on the Tauck River

No single cabins: single room supplement up to 200%

  • Carnival Cruise Line: Fun cruise isn't fun when you're only paying 200%
  • Princess Cruise Lines: Great itineraries, great food, drink and entertainment, but no individual cabins
  • Disney Cruise Lines: It's a shame Disney doesn't have individual staterooms to recognize the multi-generational families that travel with them. Aunts, uncles and grandparents traveling alone pay 200% for the cabin unless you can split the family to save money.
  • Paul Gaugin - Luxury French Polynesia

Navigate the world alone

So if you're thinking about cruising solo, this is a handy list. While cruise lines are slowing down (very slowly) by adding single cabins or paying a little attention to this long-overlooked group, don't expect more than one or two "singles" on board, which in my experience is a drink. free with the boat crew and some other solo travelers. Solo NCL is conducting Solo Lounge meetings properly for now. If you're interested in meeting people on board, I recommend using Cruise Critic's callboards and Facebook cruise groups to meet in advance, sign up for group cruises, and enjoy drinks at Sailaway. On board, instead of setting a table every night, I like to eat “anytime” and sit at the communal table. Every night you can meet a new group of people to share stories with, and if you're lucky like me, you'll make new friends on cruise ships that you'll be sailing with in the future.

Let me know if you have sailed in a single cabin on any of the previous cruise lines and how it went. Would I pay the single supplement if the stateroom was larger and additional services (or points) were included? What is your dream sailing route?
