All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Erich Maria Remarque, author of the 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front, hoped that another anti-war film would not be needed, as his film was intended to persuade those in power to stop the war. As we know, that did not happen. But then a 1930 film based on the novel received so much acclaim that you'd think no one would consider another film based on the novel necessary. Edward Berger's 2022 version, the third film adaptation of the novel, proves that Paul Bäumer's (Felix Kammerer) experience is sadly one of his perennial favorites.
Forced to report for military service due to propaganda-infused visions of being a war hero, Bäumer soon discovers that the battlefield is not the path to glory. Disturbing and unflinching, Berger's All New on the Western Front is not intended to leave the audience indifferent. And somehow, the movie is beautifully shot throughout.

Glaszwiebel: Ein Knives Out Mystery (2022)
For reasons that confused some people, Netflix only kept Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in theaters for one week (and the busy week of Thanksgiving). But as much as audiences loved Glass Onion, the second time I saw it in theaters, I'm incredibly confident that this is a movie made to be broadcast given that it's being watched in a multiplex. Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns with a twisted mystery that's quite different from the original, in part because there's no mystery at the beginning. Blanc is the guest of wealthy tech mogul Miles Bron (Edward Norton), who is about to throw a murder mystery party at which Bron himself pretends to be "offended."
Glass Onion's true delights aren't just her mystery angles, but the group of Bron fans she's invited over. Kudos to the casting director that she bested Dave Bautista as the MRA streamer, but points really go to Kate Hudson for her performance as the unlikely mindless bird. Hudson can deliver some of the lightest dialogue in years, all with an air of ignorance that will remind you that she should be in more movies. descendant (2022)
Netflix's documentary section is full of true crime content that feels like a small, quick bucks endeavor. So we're always pleasantly surprised when a great documentary educates the masses instead of repeating the greatest hits of a serial killer.
Enter Descendant, which tells the story of those forced aboard the Clotilda, the last slave ship known to have brought stolen Africans to America. Headmistress Margaret Brown does not interfere and allows the descendants of those brought here to tell the stories of their ancestors. All of these people live in an area near Mobile, Alabama known as Africatown, and they pass down stories passed down through the generations of when the Clotilda was burned to keep their illegal activities secret.

Como Banshees De Isherin (2022)
The Banshees of Inisherin reunites In Bruges director Martin McDonagh and stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for a slightly darker story. Instead of the two men being murderers, they are now friends who fell out. Only Pádraic (Farrell) doesn't notice. But Colm (Gleeson) is confident that he doesn't want anything to do with his friend anymore. And this breakup is not only a surprise to everyone on their remote little island off the coast of Ireland, it's also becoming the talk of the town. Especially when Colm takes drastic measures to drive Pádraic away.
Pádraic tries to get help from his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and the local good-for-nothing (Barry Keoghan), but there are no easy answers. And as Banshees progresses, we marvel at the humor McDonagh finds in this dark break in friendship. As powerful as it is amazing, Banshees of Inisherin is one you should check out right now.

Menu O (2022)
In this age, you can't tweet without someone saying, "Eat the yummy," and The Menu embraces that fervor with a deadly twist on food culture. Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) is a fan of Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), a critically revered restaurateur who now serves his eccentric dishes on a remote island, a perfect destination for holding a few hostages. Tyler doesn't realize what he's getting himself into when he asks Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) to be one of the few guests on Slowik's latest menu.
Those guests include a movie star (John Leguizamo, who unfortunately does not play himself) whose fame is waning, food critic Lillian Bloom (Janet McTeer), and a group of financial brothers (one of whom is headed by Arturo Castro). , the director of Broad City). highlight, plays). And once Maître d'hôtel Elsa (Hong Chau, who you may know from The Whale) has them all in her seats, everything that can go wrong does. Slowik's machinations may be a lot more pretentious than you think, but that's part of his villainy. The menu skewers everyone and makes you want a simple cheeseburger.

Catherine names Birdy (2022)
Before Bella Ramsey finds her big new role on HBOThe last of us(and after impressing as Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones), she played the inventive and inspiring Catherine, who calls herself Birdy. In this Prime Video Original, set in medieval England, Birdy's father, Sir Rollo (Andrew Scott), desperately needs the marriage of his daughter to improve the financial plight of his home.
However, Birdy is unwilling to follow the normal rules of courtship and always finds ways to scare away suitors. One of writer-director Lena Dunham's critically acclaimed projects in recent years, Catherine Called Birdy feeds on Ramsey's spark. She also has a bit of Monty Python humor.

The Black Telephone (2021)
Technically billed as a 2021 film because of its film festival premieres, The Black Phone didn't open to audiences until the summer of 2022. But when The Black Phone hit theaters, horror fans were forced to heed the call. .
His villain, The Grabber, doesn't have a nickname to worry about. Except, of course, until he overhears Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeline McGraw), two children in suburban Denver, spreading rumors about a child abductor. We soon learn that The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) is a disturbed individual who keeps the kids in a tight space. While The Black Phone (based on a story of the same name by Stephen King's son Joe Hill) is a winner in performances alone, the supernatural twists showing King's influence add to the intensity.

The Norseman (2022)
Robert Egger's latest masterpiece is an adrenaline-pumping revenge. Viking prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) has returned home to avenge the murder of his father, who was betrayed from within. He also has to free his mother, Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman). But on his way back to the top, Amleth faces a series of tests that will test his mettle.
Along the way, he finds an ally in Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy), who tells him that she is a sorceress. And yes, The Northman encompasses the mythical and the fantastic, including a visit to a prophet played by Björk. Not for everyone, The Northman is a unique work of mayhem that doesn't quit.

Beer (2022)
Acclaimed classical music icon Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) can do it all. She is a pianist, composer and glass breaker, being the first female conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. She is also reaching new heights in her career with a recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony and her new book Tár on Tár. And while all of that sounds great, her empire is teetering on the brink of disaster.
In addition to being mocked behind her back by her subordinates, Tár also has an argument with her students that goes viral online. And then there's the Whisper Campaign threatening to uncover the truth about her abuse of power. Tar, the film, impresses not only with Blanchett's sovereign and engaging performance, but also with her restraint. By showing us just enough for the audience to ask questions, the movie becomes more compelling.

no (2022)
Jordan Peele's third film, Nope, is one of his best. Here we meet brothers Emerald (Keke Palmer) and Otis Jr./"OJ" (Daniel Kaluuya), who inherited the family business Haywood Hollywood Horses, where they train horses for secure film and television work. But the terms on which the deal became his and other local backstories seem to be haunted by the supernatural. And that force seems to be lurking in the shadows again, just as his neighbor Ricky (Steven Yuen) is trying to attract visitors to his theme park.
An understated ode to cinema, Nope begins with a slow, deliberate simmer before simmering. They will liven up your sofa in no time.
